Boyle’s 82 highlight of N.Z. innings
PA Auckland A knock of 82 by David Boyle, of Canterbury, was the highlight of the New Zealand under-22 innings of 218 for eight wickets against Australian Capital Territory at Eden Park yesterday. It was the highest score against the Australians in their four matches on this tour. The New Zealand side, which won the toss, began slowly when the match began 30 minutes late. Tim McKeown and the captain. Trevor Franklin, needed 71 minutes to score 31 for the first wicket. They were held in check by an accurate medium-pace attack. Bowling a good line and getting a little assistance
from the well-greased pitch, the Australians allowed the batsmen little freedom. Only when Boyle and Tony Blain came together for the sixth wicket and with the shine gone a little from the ball, did the New Zealand side quicken the run rate. The pair added 72 in 90 minutes, with the first 50 of their partnership in 56 minutes. Boyle fell to Peter Stanek when, he was bowled by a yorker. Blain was run out. then Derek Stirling was out leg before for four by Stanek to leave the New Zealanders 189 for eight. Some controlled batting, and an ounce of luck, allowed Grant McKenzie and James Swift to add 29 in their unbeaten ninth-wicket partnership. Murray Radcliffe, perhaps the quickest of- the five
