Nursing tutors

Sir—While sympathising with Dr Fairgray's problems, it must be acknowledged that the Nursing Council's policy has always sought to maintain standards in nursing education in equivalence with all certified and professional groups. It is incorrect to state that the prerequisites are impossible to implement in New Zealand, as they already operate in this country. How can tutors teach without the necessary clinical experience, education and

training? With the advent of pre-service education for nurses, service institutions are free to implement orientation, in-service, and continuing education and training courses, necessary for the development of mature professional expertise and performance, in the face of new knowledge, technology, social demands, and employee needs. The existence of four excellent tertiary educational institutions in Christchurch makes no sense of the statement that the establishment of tutor training in the South Island would be unsuccessful.—Yours. etc.. M. L. GRIFFIN, nurse educator. December 11. 1982.
