Rugby popularity
Sir,—C. H. Clemens (December 8) claims that the dirty tactics caused the drop in’the number of rugby players and supporters in recent years. A more realistic reason would be the • emergence ■ of sporting alternatives now available to sporting youth other than just rugby and netball. Rugby has always been a hard game; recent years, have seen it magnified, often out of proportion by television coverage and exaggerated media reporting. It
is a natural step that rugby should decline in popularity when there are only limited people to play the ever-in-creasing sports we can now enjoy. Blaming roughness is a narrow view indeed.—Yours, etc., H. GILES. Rangiora. December 8, 1982.
