Rough seas cause ships’s stow to move
Rough seas struck by the Lok Sahayak when sailing to New Zealand could mean an extra five days at Lyttelton for the Indian' ship. The stow of the cargo of PVC, a plastic resin, in her holds has collapsed, forcing her to change wharves so the mess can be sorted out. .>■ Consignments of PVC for different ports are mixed up, and now the cargo will probably have to be unloaded and resorted at a Cashin Quay storage shed. Union Maritime Services, the ship’s stevedore,’was yesterday awaiting permission to proceed with the clean-up. The 10,256-ton Lok Sahayak had to shift from No. 2 East to ■ Cashin Quay where the muddled cargo coujd be better handled. She had been scheduled to sail for Auckland tomorrow but it is now unlikely she will leave before next Wednesday. Stows collapse sometimes when a ship strikes particularly rough seas or when the cargo is. badly loaded. .The Lok Sahayak was loaded . at Houston, Texas, her stevedore said yesterday.
