New city cabaret

A new cabaret nightspot has opened in Christchurch, giving people another option in late-night entertainment. Romanov’s restaurant and night club is at 152 Manchester Street. Jack Storm and Lesley Forrest, who are behind the venture, were both involved in setting up Romanov's coffee lounge 18 months ago. The full cabaret licence entitles Romanov’s to remain open until 3 a.m. (Wednesday to Saturday). Early next year, it is hoped to provide

“live theatre" entertainment. The bar is open from 6.30 p.m. and a cover charge of $4 will be made from 11 p.m.’ Light jazz to contemporary music will be provided by The Quintet Romanov (formerly The Mainland Connection). Before their association with Romanov’s, the group played at venues mainly out of Christchurch. The band members have been together for about 12 months. On vocals is Mary Sneddon, guitar. Tim Netana;

drums. Tom Williams; keyboard, David Tranter and bass guitar, Dennis Paul. A set dinner menu, consisting of five courses, costs $22. Appetisers include tomato or mango and orange juice, followed by two choices of soup. The fare also includes seafood cocktail, and two types of pate for entrees (chicken liver or bacon, cream and port). For the main course there is a choice of fillet steak with chicken liver pate and mushroom sauce, shoulder roast lamb with a fine herb sauce, chicken in burgundy sauce with mushrooms and bacon, or whole sole, panfried in butter and almonds. Desserts are chocolate mousse with cream and brandy sauce, ice-cream with peach and raspberry sauce, fresh fruit salad with icecream and cheese cake. Liqueur coffees are also included in the cost of the set menu. For people arriving later in the evening there is a supper menu. This gives a choice of pate, soup, satay and a cheese platter. The chef is Michael Cognard, formerly of the Galleon Restaurant.
