Benfica reaches last eight
NZPA-Reuter London Benfica turned the clock back to the days of its exhilarating past with an emphatic triumph over Zurich. of Switzerland, in the European Football Union (U.E.F.A.) Cup in Lisbon yesterday. The Portuguese, champions of Europe in 1961 and 1962. went into the second leg of their third-round tie level. 1-1. but moved ahead in the twelfth minute when the Yugoslav international Filipovic. breached the Swiss defence. Roared on by 65.000 vociferous fans in the Stadium of Light. Benfica went on a
goal-scoring rampage after the interval. Benfica was joined in the last eight by the Italian league leader,’ Roma, which overcame a one-goal deficit against Cologne, of West Germany. Ander’lecht. of Belgium. 6-1 up from the first leg against Sarajevo, played with their hands in their pockets in Yugoslavia, where they went down to a 40th-minut’e goal from Musemic. to stroll through. -6-2, on aggregate. Bordeaux, of France, which seldom travels as well as the region’s famous wines, came unstuck against Craiova, of Rumania, in extra time.
