Youthful Queen’s Pal will set elders a hard task

By

J. J. BOYLE

Queen’s Pal, the only three-year-old in the field, might be the stumbling block for her elders at weight-for-age in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s DB Galaxy Stakes at Riccarton today.

At the end of 2000 m, Queen's Pal's weight advantage ranging from 10kg to 6kg could count for much if she fulfils the high promise evident in her programme of spring racing. She was the South Island's best when third behind Our Flight and Passakiss in the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas. More recently she was an unlucky second over 1400 m at Invercargill. A middle distance presents a fresh challenge for the Wingatui-trained Palatable filly, but her runs up to 1600 m have been characterised by the strength of her finishes' Joyarty. also from Wingatui. will almost certainly be favourite. She is on a count-down for the $150,000 DB Auckland Cup and the lead-up programme so far has held high promise for the big staying race at Ellerslie. Her only start at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton produced a fast-finish-ing fourth at weight-for-age in the Canterbury Gold Cup, won by the northern three-year-old Nicolove. Back to a handicap, she carried 57kg into second behind The Wink at Beaumont, and might have put pressure on the winner if she had dodged traffic problems close to home. The Wink is not in the lineup this time, but her talented stablemate, The Dimple, is. This five-year-old started her five-year-old racing successfully against the sprinters at Wyndham on October 30. Like Joyarty, she is Auck-land-bound, and her run today should afford some comparison to be made with The Twinkle’s programme at this time last year. The Dimple’s elder halfsister won the DB Galaxy at Riccarton a year ago before going on to Auckland where she ran second in the Auckland Cup after winning the weight-for-age King’s Plate in style.Sea Princess and John Peel are perhaps the best of the Canterbury-trained hopefuls, but by any method of reckoning the southerners, Queen’s Pal, Joyarty, and The Dimple, should be the dominating figures in the cut-up. The home brigade might not find it much easier, either, in the Bryndwr Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Gaelic Bid is a competent metric miler from Westport

capable of improving a solid record on the course. He beat a stronger field in style at this distance on the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, then ran fourth behind Cimmissionaire on the final day. Westland has a second likely contender in Machiavelli, a winner at his only two starts this season. Riccarton’s best should be Anticipate, whose two starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting produced a win over 1800 m and a fifth behind Gaelic Bid at 1600 m. Race 1 12.40 T.A.B.
