New race of stripe rust here

A new race of stripe rust is now attacking the hitherto highly-resistant varieties of wheat such as Oroua and Karamu. Dr Tim Sanderson, plant pathologist, Crop Research Division, D.S.I.R. Lincoln, confirmed this week that rust had been found on crops of Oroua and Karamu in the Ellesmere and Lincoln districts. Dr Sanderson has urged all wheat growers of all varieties to check their crops and spray for rust if the crop is at or about flowering stage. The new race has been diagnosed by its ability to attack Oroua, which was categorised as highly resistant to the previous stripe rust race, which arrived two years ago, it is thought from Australia. Australia has at least two confirmed races of the rust but there are up to 60 known in the Northern Hemisphere. The chemical controls used for the first rust race are also effective for the new race, said Dr Sanderson.
