Cortes opened
King Juan Carlos has opened Spain’s first Leftcontrolled Cortes (Parliament) since the 1936-39 civil war, and then formally proposed the Socialist leader, Felipe Gonzalez, for Prime Minister. Mr Gonzalez, aged 40, whose Socialist Workers’ Party won a sweeping victory in a General Election last month, is expected to be officially appointed Prime Minister next week after the Congress (Lower House) votes on his Government programme. — Madrid.
