The genus Lophomyrtus is endemic to New Zealand, where it is represented by two species, and various forms. Two of the best however, were Australian-raised. The foliage of these small to medium sized shrubs is often puckered, purplish, or variegated in colour. All bear attractive white flowers and edible black fruit. They respond well to periodic cutting back which helps to keep them bushy. They are hardy, not fastidious of soil or position but do best in a medium which does not get too dry.
