Fulton, Bierwirth set up cricket victory

Ashburton reporter A solid 91-run fir St-wicket partnership between Rod Fulton and Jon Bierwirth set the Canterbury Minor Association cricket team up for its win over Australian Capital Territory in a 50over match in Ashburton yesterday. The last A.C.T. wicket fell from the first ball of the final over for 153 runs in reply to Canterbury’s 173 for five. Bierwirth and Fulton blunted what was generally an accurate A.C.T. attack on a placid pitch to have 46 runs by the twentieth over. They loosened up a little afterwards, with Bierwirth the ipore aggressive in an innings of 49. Bierwirth was out during the thirty-third over and Fulton followed 10 runs later. Dennis Mably added a wellcompiled 42 after an uncertain start. The tourists’ opening batsmen went cheaply when Peter Gulbransen was caught behind from Russell Merrin and Mark Thornton spooned

a delivery back to Murray Holmes to leave A.C.T. at 22 for two. The next four batsmen provided a bright display, but each only managed to reach the twenties as the Canterbury bowlers found good line and length. The captain, Russell Rogers, and his deputy, Ken Stone, both looked particularly convincing and punished any loose deliveries. Rogers was caught by Holmes when trying to drive the off-spin of Ed Cunningham, while Stone was bowled by Steve McFelin after being dropped earlier. At the 40-over mark A.C.T. required 44 runs with four wickets left. It tried to the end, but both of the last two batsmen were caught by Richard Ashworth on the boundary. CANTERBURY MINOR R.
