SIDELINES

LEGAL BETTING, on Sydney first-grade rugby league matches will be introduced in New South Wales next vear, a move that will severely dent an already thriving, and illegal, business. It is estimated that $500,000 each week is paid for the illegal betting cards, which give starts of so many points to less favoured sides. Legalisation was announced by the Minister of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, Michael Cleary - himself a former Australian rugby league, rugby union and athletics representative — and he expects Government revenue to benefit by $1.5 million annually. The T.A.B. will be the main agent and the announcement was made in conjunction with another allowing T.A.B. offices to be established in clubs and hotels. T.A.B. betting is also to be extended to other sporting events — what odds the Aussies to win the America's Cup? MR JIM GEDDES, who has been the secretary of the NewBrighton Rugby Club since 1955, has been made a life member of the club. According to Mr Bill Liddy, one of his school teaching colleagues, Mr Geddes is the “Mr Rugby of New Brighton and definitely the finest secretary in Canterbury rugby." His zeal was so great that he was known to have tracked boys down to the ferrv at Lyttelton to extract their club subscriptions. “One of the old club identities always referred to Jim as ‘Mr Give-It,’ always putting his hand out. Mr Liddy said. “Now, however, he is simply know-n as Muldoon." THE KANGAROO rugby league team in Britain never missed its renowned goal-kicker and centre, Mick Cronin, as it swept to its unprecedented 3-0 test series triumph and unbeaten record. In Cronin’s place was an even bigger and faster midfield back, Mai Meninga, who proved to be just as prolific a points-scorer. The young Brisbane policeman, however, fell six points short of Cronin’s world record for a test series. He compiled 48 points from two tries and 21 goals; Cronin set the standard in 1979 with two tries and 24 goals (54 points) in the home series with Britain. THE MERIVALE-PAPANUI senior rugby team will again be coached by the former All Blacks, John Creighton and Howard Joseph, next winter. However, a new manager will have to be found as Fred Daniel, who has filled the position most ably for the last four years, has been transferred to Dunedin. Fortunately for the club, Mr Daniel will be back in Christchurch in 1985. With a number of the older players expected to retire, Merivale-Papantii is likely to have a fairly young side next season. HEAD AND shoulders above the rest in the senior men’s softball big-hit parade this season is the Noel Leeming Burnside outfielder, Roy Ah Kuoi. Ah Kuoi’s two automatic home runs at Papanui Domain on Tuesday evening took his total to seven and he has blasted two three-baggers as well. Next come John Kottier with four home runs and one threebagger; Mike Tyree (Western Suburbs) with four home runs; Jimmy Hall (Burnside) with three home runs and three threebaggers; Alan Hall (Burnside) with three home runs and two three-baggers; and Steve Vivian (Papanui) with three automatic home runs. Burnside’s tall pitcher, Robert (Chub) Tangaroa easily tops the strike-out count with 132 and Colin Sutherland (Papanui), 92, is the next poised to reach a century of “Ks."
