Ben will appreciate drop m class

Special correspondent Auckland After tackling the country's best at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Addington Raceway Ben will appreciate the drop in class in the Rolfe Memorial at the Thames Trotting Club's meeting tomorrow evening. He would need only to reproduce the form which gave him a fourth in the Cup (he was subsequently disqualified) and third to Hands Down and Zabadak on the last night at Addington to be the toughest to beat. Ben did exceptionally well on the trip and his trainers, Jack and Brian Hughes, had no hesitation in giving him a run at a matinee meeting at Pukekohe on Wednesday. The four-year-old gelding is on 20m in the Rolfe Memorial but he is such a fast beginner that he should soon be handily placed. His main opposition looks like coming from Right Bower and Miss Clevedon. Right Bower, which is now trained at Pukekohe by Tony Perucich, raced consistently well in strong company at the Cup meeting and he looks well placed on 10m. Miss Clevedon was one of the best three-year-old fillies in the country last season and she has had a third and a first in her only two races this term. Her win was at Alexandra Park on November 12 when she ran the 3200 m journey in the respectable time of 4min 15.85. She has since done very well in training. Much interest will be taken in Melton Monarch, winner of the New Zealand Messenger last season. He has not raced for seven months but he has done plenty of work as well as lining up at three matinees. Off 20m, though, he is set a stern task first up. Newt makes strong appeal in the Ensor Memorial, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. He indicated that he was close to his best form when he was a close third at Alexandra Park on November 19. Strident will have a big following. At her lastest appearance, she was narrowly beaten by the highly regarded Never Bend at Alexandra Park on November 19. Never Bend was an acceptor for the Ensor Memorial but he was withdrawn after being slightly sore in his off foreleg early in the week. Chorus Line is sure to be a. hot favourite in the Thames Nursery Mobile Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble. Supreme Ruler and Kiwi Lord are fancied for the other legs.
