Child research ‘priority’
PA Wellington Research into child health and health education will be priorities for the Medical Research Council in 1983, says the chairman, Mr John Fair. The council will also support research into respiratory disorders, the health of
Polynesians, mental disorders, accidents, the use and abuse of therapeutic drugs, geriatric medicine, and the care of the elderly. Mr Fair said it was important to maintain adequate funding for medical research. “Over the last five years New Zealand’s standards of research have risen and a
pool of highly skilled medical research workers now exists,” he said. “Lack of funds frequently means that high-quality research cannot be supported and this may lead to the loss of this valuable resource of talent which is< contributing to improved health for New Zealanders.” . ,
