Noted Mormon administrator dies
NZPA Salt Lake City Eldon Tanner, a counsellor to four Mormon Church presidents, whose administrative skills were deemed crucial in the years of the Church’s most rapid growth, has died at his home. He was 84. A Church spokesman, Mr Jerry Cahill, said that doctors attributed the. death to cardiac arrest. Mr Tanner had been in poor health for some time, suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Mr Tanner was first counsellor to the Mormon leader,
Spencer Kimball, and had served as a counsellor to three previous presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints over 19 years. Mr Tanner's skills in business and finance were important 'to the. Church during the last two decades, when the faith’s membership trippled from 1.7 million in 1960 to more than five million today. He was influential in helping change the Church’s administration to handle the growth.
