Twilight cricket

East-Shirley, a club which is particularly adept at performing well m cricket competitions which require less than 11 players in a team, has taken a narrow lead after two rounds of “The Press” twilight cricket tournament. ■ Earlier this month East again won an annual six-a-side event. Last evening it convincingly beat High School Old Boys to take up the front-running in the twilight contest, which is for teams of nine-a-side. Adding further lustre to East's success, its all-rounder, Graham Pulley, won the Lion Breweries “player of the week” award for his three wickets and 21 runs. Robert McKay was to the forefront of East’s batting with 38 retired. East has 30 points, one more than Lancaster Park.- which, in turn, is one ahead of St Albans. Although Park did not attain its customary prolific total, it still had more than 40 runs in hand over Riccarton. Garry Straw’s feat of taking three for 10 for Riccarton earned him the Canterbury Sports Depot “personality of the week” prize. St Albans accounted for Supporters, with Andrew Arnold having a useful double, and Paul Langrope (39 retired) led a strong Country batting spree against Suburban. In the other match Burnside-West had 26 runs to spare over Sydenham. Bridget Legg was the women's “player of the week” in making 35 retired and taking two cheap wickets for the leading side, St Albans, against Merivale-Papa-nui. A brave 35 retired by Norma Thompson for Merivale won for her the "personality of the week” award. Depth in batting paved the way for Riccarton to convincingly beat Lancaster Park, with Donna Avery and Vivian Cowles retiring for their respective
