Spending up — P.M.
Wellington reporter Tentative results of spending since the tax cuts have shown an increase, said the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, yesterday. It was too early to judge how extra money in taxpayers’ pockets was being used, but a survey by the Prime Minister’s Department of turnover figures, the food price index, and consumer durables for' October, showed that spending was marginally up in money terms, but down in real terms.
However, spending figures for November were better, probably because the cuts (effective from October 1) were now feeding through after initial repayment of debts, Mr Muldoon said. It was too early to say whether the November increase was in real terms, he said.
