M.P. wants public hearing

W: Prebble,. who will appear before Parliament’s Privileges Committee, has asked the chairman, the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, to open the proceed-. ings to the news media, Mr McLay would hot comment on the request because the matter was before the committee, said a spokesman
for the Minister’s office yesterday. • • : . Mr Prebble (Labour, Auckland Central), who is alleged to have misled Parliament, said in a letter to Mr McLay that he had “nothing to hide, and I want the public to know the full facts.” The breach of privilege charge arose out of Mr Prebble’s comments about the sale of Waiheke Island
land to an Auckland businessman, Mr John Spencer. Mr Prebble said in his letter that “given the right of the public to know what has happened regarding the Government’s secret dealings over the land, I put it to you that to hold the hearing in secret would be wrong.” The committee’s hearings are not held in public.
