First win of tour

NZPA London The Wellington rugby team scored the first win of its tour of the British Isles when it defeated a Morley President’s XV, 31-3, at Morley on Sunday. The Wellingtonians ran in five tries, four of which were converted by the full-back, Allan Hewson, against a side drawn from the Yorkshire area and including the Hawke’s Bay lock, Peter Fulford. A number of the Morley side had played in the Yorkshire side which bn Saturday qualified for the final of the English County Championship by beating Middlesex, and Wellington's manager, Brian Frederikson, conceded they might have been jaded by that game. Wellington, which previously on its six-match tour had lost to Ulster, Leinster and Swansea, started rather slowly in conditions marred only by a rather slippery surface. A Hewson penalty paved the way for two tries which carried the tourists to a 15-0 lead at half-time. The first try was particularly well worked starting from a backline attack from near The flanker and captain, Paul Quinn, backed up well 20 metres from the line and, although held, was carried over the line by the Wellington forward pack. The wing, Mike Clamp, the first five-eighths, Tu Wyllie, the second . five-eighths, Brian Cederwall, and the centre, Jamie Salmon, added the other tries while the Morley side could offer only a penalty by its first fiveeighths, Ken Plant,- in reply. “We were also slow to get going in the second half but played patches of good rugby,” Mr Frederikson said. The All Black wing, Bernie Fraser, who missed the game because of a hamstring strain, is expected to play in Wellington’s next game against the South of Scotland on Thursday, and the New Zealand Maoris’ prop, Scott Crichton, may also be recovered from a bout of influenza which caused him to miss the Morley game. The first-choice half-back, John Heale, is also sidelined with an injury suffered in the Swansea defeat.
