Defence puts in Sperry Univac
The Ministry of Defence has recently converted its data-processing installation at Porirua to a Sperry Univac dual 1100 60 multiprocessor system, consisting of two processors with dual access capabilities to discs and tape.
The emphasis is on the ability to be operational at all times. The mainframe replaces an ICL 1903. which was installed in 1967.
The implementation of this new range of equipment has resulted in a change of emphasis in the department from batch processing to online processing. It has required a substantial conversion. which had to be achieved within one year, with a deadline of mid-April. Already a number of terminals have been installed for users throughout the country. Staff at the centre include persons from the Army. Air Force,, and Navy, and civilians who have elected to join EDP. The service personnel on average spend a minimum of four years at the EDP Centre. The operation is manned for two full shifts, which will be extended soon to provide a 24-hour coverage.
The work is similar to that of a commercial organisation in many respects, providing data processing for personnel, financial, inventory management and engineering applications on a national basis for the three services.
