Liquor advertising on TV
Sir,—We are concerned that Television New Zealand has begun screening .advertisements for liquor outlets recently. Has some loophole been found in the legislation prohibiting direct liquor advertising on television? We feel this sort of advertising is undermining the growing awareness of the effects of alcohol abuse, particularly in ’ the wake of Alcohol Alert Week.—Yours, etc., W. R. FRIGHT, S. L. EVANS. November 13, 1982. [Mr R. A. L’Estrange, director of sales and marketing, Television New Zealand, replies: “Providing they meet the criteria set out in the Broadcasting Corporation’s Television Standards and Rules, liquor outlets may advertise on television. Over the years, advertisements for several different wholesalers, wine outlets and hotels have been telecast by Television New Zealand.”]
