Truck driver killed
PA Wellington An Auckland truck driver was killed and his passenger injured when, their articulated truck carrying acids tipped over in the Makohine Valley, 44km south of Taihape. about midnight, on Wednesday. The man killed was Pio Samuel Bako, aged 34. Emergency services, the Army, Rangitikei County Council, and Ministry of Works staff worked throughout the night as the five varieties of acids on the truck mixed together in one lethal combination. . Constable K. Leggat, of the Taihape police, said the accident is thought to have happened about midnight, but it was another hour before the alarm was raised. The passenger escaped with minor injuries and staggered several kilometres
along the road to get help. The heavily laden articulated unit was en route from Auckland to Wellington. The load also included lead nails. C.N.G. conversion units, and motor-cycles. It is thought that the trailer unit ran off the road into a bank then tipped over, landing on its cab and deck. The containers of acids spilt on impact and the liquid mixed together, especially with the lead nails, into a “potent brew," Constable Leggat said.
