Chch ‘leader in crime’
- Parliamentary reporter Crime statistics for Christchurch showed “crumbling social values” directly related to increasing materialism. said the member of Parliament for Papanui, Mr M. K. Moore. He was referring to the increase in reported crimes in Christchurch this year (“The Press.” November 26) and unfavourable comparisons with the rate of different crimes in Wellington and. Auckland. Mr Moore said that he hao had his car broken into twice within the last month; Crime against both.the person.amp property ..'were- /increasing; and Christchurch, was leading the way in .certain'/areas. It was obvious -that growing unemployment' had/ an important impact on the growing crime rates, 1 he said. Unemployment tin Christchurch had increased 13-fbld since 1975 ’arid last year had risen 13 per cent. .
