Girl tripped constables
A girl, aged 17. was yesterday given a six months deferred sentence after pleading guilty and being convicted of being found under age in a bar. behaving in the bar in a disorderly manner and with resisting a policeman .in the execution of his duty. Sergeant G. G. Cleland told Judge Fogarty in the District Court that when police made a routine visit to the New Brighton Tavern at 11.20 p.m. on November 25 they found the defendant. Margaret Jean- Williams, unemployed. in the bar. As the police moved past her she "foot-tripped" three constables. Williams also attempted to
poke her fingers in the eyes of the arresting officer. As the police were trying , to handcuff the defendant she tore the shirt and tie of one policeman and for this compensation of $18.50 was sought, said Sergeant Cleland. Mr M. WTlliams (the duty solicitor) said that the defendant’s facial injuries resulted from a fall after being handcuffed by the police. DEPOSITIONS A man charged with indecently assaulting a woman, aged 25. and with assaulting her yesterday elected trial by jury. No pleas were entered.by Julius Hetei, aged 32. a pat-
tern setter (Mr E. Bedo) who is charged with committing the offences on November 18. Hetei was remanded on bail to February 1 for the taking of depositions. BAIL OPPOSED Bail was opposed when a youth, aged 17, appeared on a charge of burglary, and another of unlawfully taking a $2OOO car. Darren .Robert David James. unemployed. is charged with breaking into the Queen Street premises of Brent Ferguson Motors. Ltd. at Richmond on November 23. and with unlawfully taking a car at Hokitika two days later. Opposing bail. Sergeant Cleland said that the alleged
burglary resulted in property worth $'11,500 being stolen. ' The defendant had no job. no address, and had recently been living in the streets of Nelson, he said. Bail was ’ refused in the public interest and the Judge remanded James in custody to December 3. James did not plead. ASSAULT CHARGE A man. aged 53. was charged that being a male he assaulted a female on November 25 was remanded in custody to December 1. No plea was entered by George Witana. unemployed. Bail was opposed by Sergeant Cleland.
