Experience feature of tennis squads
By
JOHN BROOKS
Experience is the dornin- 1 ant feature of the Canterbury senior representative tennis squads, which were named yesterday. Six of the eight men chosen have played for the Wilding Shield, most of them on several occasions, and five of the eight women are highly experienced Nunneley Casket players. Canterbury has won the casket eight times in the last nine seasons, and Shirley Haig, Robyn Hunt, Sally Moorfield and Judy Phillips have contributed to most, of those successes, along with Christine Newton, who is at present campaigning in Australia. In the men’s, squad, Brett Hibbert and Michael Mooney were members of the team which won the Wilding Shield four years ago, and Barry Taylor, the veteran of the group, is a former Wellington representative. The two squads will practise under the direction of a Christchurch professional coach, Terry Mooney, at Wilding Park on December 5,12 and 19. But the final choices will not be made until after the holidays, when the selectors, Mrs Pat Leo-
pold and Messrs Ross Purves and Jim Martin, have considered players’ performances in tournaments. Members of the squads, in alphabetical order, are.— Women: Lynn Cowie (Fendalton). Shirley Haig, Jane Howe (United), Robyn Hunt (Barrington), Phillippa Lewthwaite (United), Sally Moorfield (Shirley), Judy Phillips (Avonside). Julianne Taylor (Shirley). Men: Alan Adair (Fendalton). Vernon Aubrey (Bishopdale), Richard Dalman (Elmwood). Brett Hibbert (Shirley), Rhett Mason (Elmwood), Michael Mooney (Edgeware), Hugh Robinson (United), Barry Taylor (Woolston). Mason and Miss Phillips, both of whom are languishing on the sidelines with leg injuries, have been named subject to receiving medical clearances. The selectors have reserved the right to add or delete players from the squads. The results of the most recent round of ranking matches did not suggest any immediate changes, although Miss Cowie, who was a reserve for Canterbury last year, beat Miss Lewthwaite, a team member for the last two seasons.
