Student curb ‘discriminatory’
PA Wellington The entry restriction for private overseas students to post-graduate studies is unnecessarily restrictive and discriminatory, says the University Students’ Association. In a submission presented to the Minister of Immigration, Mr Malcolm, the association recommended that the restriction be rescinded and the over-all criteria be reviewed. The association also sought a meeting with Mr malcolm to discuss the restriction. “According to our research,' many highly satis-
factory students will be excluded from post-graduate study because of the restriction," said the association’s acting president,, Ms Sue Bond. 'y'';/'' '“This will ,lead to a decline in the quality’of post-gradu-ate ■■ studies. Overseas students make an invaluable contribution in this area and Mr Malcolm’s changes will undercut this,” she said. The restriction, which relates to an overseas student gaining A bursary passes, or the equivalent, to qualify for post-graduate. study, did not consider language and-social factors, said the association.
