The highly rated Southland bitch, Cecily Mae, made light work of a top field and a saturated track to win the $l5OO New Zealand Oaks final in Invercargill on Thursday evening. Starting from box No. 7, the Eade-trained daughter of Ungwilla Lad and Monalee Band ran out a comfortable three lengths and a half winner, cutting out the 569 m journey in 34.995, normally a slow time but the fastest
recorded on Thursday in adverse conditions. Humbug Lass did best of the Canterbury visitors by finishing second, making the pace until the home straight. Assessed at class 1, Humbug Lass was far from disgraced in her attempt to repeat the performance of her halfsister, Humbug Girl, which was successful in the event last year. Lady Acclaim battled on for a fair third.
