Jobless may cost $600M more
NZPA Canberra Australia’s unemployment is now rising so sharply that the Federal Government is facing the prospect of spending sAust6oo million more than it expected on unemployment benefits. The Federal Treasurer, John Howard, admitted this when he released a statement saying that the Federal Treasury had again revised its estimate of the number of Australians likely to be receiving unemployment benefits this year.
The revision is the second in six weeks. Like the first, it added sAust3oo million, to the amount the Federal Government is likely to face in payouts on unemployment benefits this financial year. . The news has embarrassed the Federal Government and added fresh impetus to its determination to get a 12month wage freeze—the measure it believes offers the best hope of arresting the present collapse in Australia’s labour market.
