Smoke bomb in police station yard charge

A man charged with throwing an ignited smoke bomb into the yard of the Central Police Station on Wednesday afternoon was remanded in custody ’ to December 2 by Judge Fogarty in the District Court yesterday. John David Bridges, aged 30, a sound technician, had been charged with unlawfully possessing the canister and’ with throwing the ignited canister, with reckless disregard for the safety of others, into the yard at the police station. Bridges, who had a bandaged hand, did not plead to the charges.

Bail 'was opposed by Sergeant M. P. Caldwell. He said that the defendant was a known member of HART, and that the canister allegedly thrown by Bridges was capable of burning people on touch. In view of the seriousness of the alleged offence bail was refused by the

judge. DRUG OFFENCES

When police executed a search warrant at the address of an unemployed man they found twenty tickets of D.M.A:, a class A drug, a quantity of cannabis leaf, and 992 cannabis seeds, said Sergeant M. P. Caldwell. Neil Douglas Hern, aged 19 (Mr S. G. Barker) admitted the three offences which occurred on October 6.

He told the police that the drugs were for his own use and that he had paid $8 for each of the D.M.A. tickets.

Hern was convicted and remanded on bail of $4OOO to December 2 for a probation report arid sentence. 19 CHARGES

An unemployed man facing 19 charges, relating to alleged offences committed between September and this month, was remanded in custody to November 30. Douglas John Mathieson, aged 18, faces 11 charges of theft, involving property-

A man charged with causing bodily injury to Hugh Lowell Stark, by carelessly using a car in Victoria Street was remanded to February 1 for a defended hearing. Stewart John Sanders, aged 33, a floor layer, was charged with committing the offence on’ September 11. (Before Judge Fraser) RECEIVED ANTIQUES A housewife was convicted and remanded on bail to December 15 for a probation report and sentence after pleading guilty to receiving antiques, china and assorted property, to a total value of about $12,000.
