Case details kept secret

PA Auckland The president of the New Zealand Law: Society;' Mr Bruce Slane, has declined to reveal details of a case in which an Auckland lawyer was disciplined last week. The lawyer’s identity was suppressed, by the Statutory Disciplinary Committee which heard the case. Although the committee works independently, details of the case could have been released by the society’s president. Mr Slane said: “I have considered whether details of

the charges and findings of the disciplinary committee should be released. There is no matter of public interest which requires the nature of the charges to be published and, in view of earlier reports, to do so might breach the order of the disciplinary committee. “When the public ought to know of findings against a practitioner the society publish details of charges, the findings and any penalties imposed, and the disciplinary committee does not suppress the practitioner’s name.”
