Corp, shuts first line
PA Invercargill The Makarewa to Mossbum railway line in Southland will be the first to be closed by the Railways Corporation. The General Manager of Railways, Mr T. M. Hayward, has announced that the branch line will close “as expected” on December 12. He said that the' Minister
of. Railways, Mr Gair, had approved the closing after the Railways consultation with local staff unions and local bodies, and the main users of the line. The Railways Department became a corporation in April, under the helm of a seven-man board.'While the board has wide-ranging control, the Minister retains the
authority to approve or reject recommendations to close lines. Mr Hayward said: “The decision to close the line follows a sharp decline in tonnage on the route, and all the staff- concerned have been offered alternative Railways work.” The line last year cost about $510,000.
