Top Royal beef breeder Canadian guest

The Angus cattle breeder who won the Meat and Wool Cup at this year’s Royal Show in Christchurch, Mr J. Robin Fraser, of Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, has gone to Saskatchewan, Canada for the huge Canadian Western Agribition. He has accepted an invitation from the Canadian Government, the Saskatchewan Provincial Government and the officials of the event to be a guest at the Agribition, held at Regina, Saskatchewan, at the end of November.

Despite blizzard and minus 10 degree conditions, over 100,000 visitors attend the midwinter Agribition where 5000 head of the best of Canada’s cattle, sheep, pigs and horses compete for a $lOO,OOO prize for the highest calibre animal. Two show and two sale rings operate continuously throughout the 7 days. Mr Fraser will be fresh from his outstanding success

at the recent Royal Show where the Stern stud cattle swept the pool in the largest entry of Angus cattle (some 60 animals) for many years. The. three-year-old bull Stern Black Power 425 (by Stern 760 from Stern 925) won the Angus Supreme Grand Championship. The nine-year-old cow with calf at foot, Stern 802 (by Te Karaka R 62 from Harmonic of Stern) was Reserve Grand Champion, having won the Female Grand Championship.

Stern Black Power 425 went on to win the coveted Meat and Wool Cup competing against 11 other champions of their respective beef

The Angus bull was the only entry to receive point platings by all breed judges and literally stepped seven paces ahead of last year’s winner.

When Mr Fraser last exhibited at Canterbury, in 1967, he took , home the cup but

since that time the Hereford entries have held a monopoly. Mr and Mrs Fraser were hosts to many overseas visitors to Stern during last year’s fourth World Angus Forum. While overseas Mr Fraser will be following up plans for the fifth World Forum in Canada including the participation of New Zealand breeders in an embroyo transplant export scheme for ultimate exhibition of the resultant progeny at the Canadian Forum in 1985.
