Mormon programme

Sir, — We have watched with incredulous amazement, the inflamatory news item on TV about the Mormons. We are not Mormons, but we have recently visited Salt Lake City. The women I met could not have hidden the shapeless garment displayed, on TV under the sun-frocks, bathing suits, sleekly tailored suits and summer dresses they wore. Indeed the Salt Lake City women were the most elegantly dressed, women we met anywhere in America or Canada. The garments displayed, did however, remind me of the clothing our missionaries insisted on Pacific women wearing for the sake of modesty. We were so impressed by the culture, honesty, and industry of the people we met that we delved into Mormon history. There we found that their American fellow men were at times in the past, so irritated by the above qualities, that they presented them mercilessly. The Mormon stand against slavery was specially resented by southerners. How sad if New Zealanders are going to start another witchhunt. — Yours, etc., E. MARTIN. November 22, 1982.
