Weinmeister to improve on Riccarton efforts

By

J. J. BOYLE

Weinmeister, the only four-year-old in the field, could be the stumbling block for his elders in the Kettle Memorial, first leg of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

Much of Weinmeister’s form has a roller-coaster look about it. But the experiment of trying him in blinked tomorrow is expected to lift his standard of performance above anything he showed in two starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Before his-failures on his home track earlier in the month he dead-heated for first over the Kettle Memorial distance (2000 m at the Banks Peninsula meeting. Two of his ' best runs earlier ■in the season pro-

duced a win over 1600 m at Ashburton and a fourth in the Geraldine Cup, each time as the mount of Jim Collett, who will ride him again tomorrow. Weinmeister is 4.5 kg below the top weight, Another Story, whose spring programme was affected because of a virus, but has now done enough to fit her for a peak run. At best Another Story would be good enough to distinguish herself in stronger company than this, and there could be no great

t surprise if she managed to i give weight all round toi morrow. , Streetem and Keyman, i winners at the Westland meeting, will claim plenty of ' attention again if it comes ■ up wet for tomorrow’s race, ■ and Stead, after three races this time up, could find enough improvement to be a force from the tail of the handicap. Worldly Mist and Decor Doll will be form runners for . the Tuahiwi stable of Ray and Barbara Harris in the Griffiths Handicap, second

leg of the T.A.B. double. Worldly Mist was Sea Princess’s only challenger in the Westland Club’s weight-for-age Miss Scenicland Stakes. Decor Doll was third in that race, and placed value on that form by beating the sprinters on the second day of the Westland meeting. Frontiniac, Jane Again, and Double March might be the best of the others, but Admiral Blair, fresh up, with his ability in the wet, could leave his stamp on the race, given footing to suit him.
