8700 applications for 147 teaching jobs
PA Hamilton More than 8700 applications have been received by the South Auckland Education Board for 147 primary teaching jobs.. Applications closed on Novemberl6, and since then the board has been busy with the huge task of processing them. Last year applications trickled in over the year. The executive officer of teacher services, Mr Charles Tennent, said that the number of positions was similar to last year, but the sudden rush had happened because
the board last advertised in June. The board had delayed advertising because of an anomaly in the appointments procedure which gave applicants with broken service the right to appeal against applicants with continuous service. Mr Tennent- said that many of the , teachers appeared to have sent in multiple applications. “There has been an average of 60 applications for each position and there is not anything like that number of
teachers looking for work," he said. Teachers could expect to hear the outcome by the end of this week or the beginning of next, he said. The unsuccessful applicant still has . the right of .appeal against appointment. Teachers given first priority would be those who had been made redundant because of falling rolls — the South Auckland Education Board had lost 75 positions because of falling rolls in the last year.
