Mr Rowling chides Golden Bay council
PA Nelson The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Rowling, has criticised a county council in his electorate for rejecting a petition calling for the a rea to be declared a nuclear-free zone. The Golden Bay County Council accepted that the petition was signed by a majority (51 per cent) of people eligible to vote in county elections, but declined to accept the petition. Mr Rowling said at a public meeting in Takaka that he was surprised the council had rejected the petition. It was too important a matter to have such a presentation made and then de-
dined by a decision that suggested the issue was closed, he said. “The issue will not go away.” Those who felt there was refuge in nuclear weaponry were “under a significant delusion,” Mr Rowling said. The council represented ratepayers who wanted to be represented on . the nuclear issue. Mr Rowling made his remarks in front of the County Chairman, Mr Rodney Nees, who was chairman at the meeting. Mr Rowling said he had warned Mr Nees of what he was going to say and preferred that Mr Nees was there to hear him.
