University expedition to Snares

A scientific expedition from the University of Canterbury will leave this weekend for the Snare Islands, 100 km south of Stewart Island. The team of four will be the first to visit the Snares since 1976. Their principal task will be to study the ecological effects of a recent decision to permit fishing vessels to moor in the lee of the islands, which are a totally restricted nature reserve.

Mr P. M. Johns, a senior lecturer in zoology, will lead the expedition. He will act as honorary ranger for the Lands and Survey Department and report his findings. He will assess, for example, the effects on animal and plant life if rats or mice were inadvertently introduced from trawlers. Mr Johns will supervise the work of three honours students going with him, Mr Colin Mishelly, Ms Christine Butts, and Ms Catherine Pettigrew.
