Revision will look at containers
Increased efficiency in container handling would be one of the areas studied in a complete revision of harbour law, the Minister of Transport, Mr Gair, has said.
He told the South Pacific Ports Association that many containers were being handled across conventional wharves, instead of unused and expensive container terminals.
“I understand there is an industry practice which allows oniv full cellular vessels to berth under container cranes, and so some containers are handled far less efficiently at ' other wharves,” he said.
Mr Gair said he suspected that much of the problem arose from traditional industry practices and their local variations.
A growing awareness of the “shortcomings and dated features” of the Harbours Act led to the decision to completely review harbour law, he said. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Nil.
