Drifting vessels a worry
PA Wellington Fishermen who allow their boats to drift at night to save fuel are worrying the Ministry of Transport. The practice lias caused at least one collision in New Zealand waters and is dangerous without proper precautions, according to the Ministry’s Marine Division.
Drifting at night .'allows crews to rest and saves the cost in fuel it would take sailing from the fishing grounds to and from a suitable anchorage.
Even while drifting the ’ fishing boats are still under way and must comply with the international collision regulations. These require a look-out at all times, suitable lighting, and that the boat’s engine is always ready for immediate use. Owners and skippers who did not comply with the. regulations were a danger to I themselves, and others, the i Marine Division said.
