1000 car workers laid off
Parliamentary reporter A total of 1070 workers in the motor-vehicle industry, 38 of them in Christchurch, have been made redundant in the last few weeks, the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, told Parliament yesterday. The biggest number Of layoffs had. been in Wellington,
where 488 people had lost their jobs, he said, in reply to a question. In Auckland, 448 workers had been made redundant. Mr Bolger said that the lay-offs had been caused by the downturn in car sales. Whether the jobs were regained would depend on the
rate at which the car industry picked up. The motor industry had been at its highest level of output before the downturn, he 'said. Staff had been increased. This year, the motor-vehicle industry would sell, its second-highest number of motor-vehicles.
