Twit tales

Roald Dahl's writing for children has produced such classics as “Charlie and.the ' Chocolate Factory" and “James and the Giant Peach"; one's expectations are high when a new Roald Dahl appears. However “The Twits” (Puffin. $3.50) is rather a disappointment. Written for children from six to 10. it tells of two extremely nasty characters, Mr and Mrs Twit, who play horrible tricks on each other and are very cruel to the family of monkeys they have caged in the backyard. Some parts of the story show flashes of the bizarre .twists of imagination and humour we expect'from this writer, but much of it, and especially the ending, seems forced and unfunny. Quentin Blake's idiosyncratic drawings add spice to a book which the reader will probably enjoy greatly if he is not expecting the usual high Dahl standard.— Margaret Quigley.
