The economy

Sir,—Bravo for Leon Morel, and good on “The Press” for publishing his article (November 18).- Because we like the words -.“free” and “trade”, we ; have too easily accepted “free trade” as a good thing, but this archaic doctrine has always served the. powerful and hurt the smaller nations. How can we “compete” with industries in South Korea, where 25 cents is a common hourly rate and any opposition is ■ brutally repressed?', That is certainly not New Zealand the way we want it. Only a full-employ-

ment policy will benefit all instead of merely the wealthy. That is the only policy that will put people before profits. Cute Hugh and Round Rob would do better as garden gnomes, where their smiles can be amusing instead of deceptive. Let us have economic planners who keep the real interests of New Zealand in mind. — Yours, etc., W. E. WILLMOTT. November 18, 1982.
