Attack by dogs

Sir,—The reported incident of a duck and duckling being attacked by dogs mentioned by Philip Baines (November 15), while to be deplored, is yet another reflection on irresponsible dog owners rather than the dogs concerned. However, your correspondent uses the incident to vent his obvious hatred for the dog species in general. Wildlife officers could enlighten him as to the many dastardly deeds committed against ducks and other wildlife by the two-legged “friends” Philip Baines claims to choose

well. Tiny ducklings have been deliberately trodden to death, clubbed, or run over by motorists — to mention a few. In denouncing dogs as “filthy,” could he remove his blindfold and'observe public places, taking note of the filth plastered on buildings for all to see, or listen to the news, or read newspapers? Perhaps then, he will understand why some people choose their friends well — also, the four-legged ones! — Yours, etc., ESTELLE WIN. November 17, 1982.
