Detective in court on assault charges

PA Auckland A Papakura detective charged with assaulting four people appeared in the District Court at Otahuhu, this week. Lewis Noel Proctor, aged 35, did not plead to the charges. He was remanded on $5OO bail to November 22. He faces three charges that on November 13 he assaulted Richard Allan Combie, Barry Davies and Peter Noble Johnston, and one charge that between November. 12 and November 13 he assaulted Desmond John Hughes. Defence counsel,' Mr Kevin Ryan, asked for a two-week remand for a psychiatric report.

He applied for suppresssion of Proctor’s name, not only because of his occupation, but because he had a young family and a son sitting School Certificate this week. Mr Ryan said Proctor had a brother with the same occupation and the same initials, “which could cause a bit of harm.” Judge Blackwood declined suppression. He said that if Proctor had a brother with the same occupation and the same initials, then it would be “grossly unfair” if he was implicated, but it would be even worse if Proctor's name was suppressed as this would "place suspicion on every police officer in that station."
