Cup renamed again
PA Auckland' The Auckland Cup - renamed the DB Cup two months ago — will now beknown as the DB Auckland. Cup. The chairman of Dominion Breweries Ltd, Graham Callam, said today he hoped the decision to reinstate “Auck- ( land” in the title would be.seen as a public-spirited gesture.
He added: "The new name: will not diminish the importance to Dominion Breweries of involvement in New Zealand’s most prestigious rac-, ing event, nor our original concern to give support, which would preserve its! status and help ensure the’ long-term future of racing' and breeding." The decision two months ago to change the title of the Auckland Cup to the DB Cup,to mark the sponsorship of . Dominion Breweries, brought; a storm of protest from both racing followers and non-’ racing people. As well as announcing the new name, Mr Callam yesterday disclosed the amount of his company’s sponsorship — $50,000 — believed to be the largest- given for any horse race in New Zealand. "From the time of the; announcement of the com-' pany’s sponsorship,” he said, "there has been national interest and discussion over the name change. We are now responding positively to that.”
He said Dominion Brewer-, ies planned to continue to assist the Auckland Racing Club by making substantial promotional expenditure to attract maximum attendances.
