Double Jay likely to gain well-earned win tomorrow

By

J. J. BOYLE

Double Jay has tenacity and consistency to overcome her lack of inches, and she is expected to break through for a well-earned win in the Miss Scenicland Stakes at Hokitika tomorrow.

Mr Lester Woods’ five-year-old Double Speed mare has not been worse than fourth in her three starts this season. She was capable of second fresh up in the North Canterbury Cup (2000 m on Labour Day and her two starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting yielded a close third over 1800 m last Saturday and a fourth over 1600 m a week earlier. Under scale weights Double Jav has 56kg in the first leg 'of the Westland Racing Club's T.A.B. double, but she battled bravely under 53 to the end in last Saturday’s 1800 m race, and should be at no marked disadvantage in a field not notable for any depth of quality. Strongest challenges for Double Jay might come from Black Gull, Another Story, and Sea Princess. Black Gull beat Double Jay by inches for second at Riccarton last Saturday, and was pegged back by Anticipate only in the last stride. Another Story won this race two years ago and won the C.J.C. Breeders’ Stakes in much more distinguished company later that season. Sea Princess did not distinguish herself against the sprinters at Motukarara and Riccarton, perhaps because her hard-fought winning run in the South Island Thoroughbred Stakes had taken some toll of her vitality. She is too good to disregard on the strength of two unplaced runs but her immediate programme will be up in the air if she fails again without reasonable excuse tomorrow. Wadi Wahid, winner of two 1200 m races in successive starts earlier in the spring, is selected for the Hokitika Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Race 6 2.30 T.A.B. DOUBLE T.A.B. QUINELLA MISS SCENICLAND STAKES $7000; 1650 m; weight-for-age. 1 0300 Acadia 7 56.0 Nippy, but could be tested at this distance. D. Crozier ■ 2 0080 Anonoma Mae 18 56.0 Win here would be major surprise. 3 00 Another Story 8 56.0 Talented galloper earlier, but had promising career affected by injury. Won this race two years ago. R. McCann 4 3600 Bilberry 12 56.0 Form has slumped since early in season. Might struggle at this distance. J. 5 4092 Black Gull 14 56.0 Close second to Anticipate 1800 m Riccarton last Saturday, a run to be respected for this. R. Biddulph. 6 7660 Decor Doll 4 56.0 Has been freshened since last-start middle-dis-tance failure. Not the worst on earlier form. R. Bent 7 9084 Dellana 15 56.0 Showed some improvement when 4th 2000 m Wyndham last month, but over-all form not encouraging. K. Burnett 8 243 Double Jay 6 56.0 Small but game. One of top chances after placed runs at Riccarton and Rangiora. G. Davison 9 9186 Jane Again 11 56.0 Failed in 1200 m Winton sprint last start. Most recent win was over 1400 m at Wingatui in August. Chance if she has freshened and track is soft. D. Frye 10 3708 Princess Nardia 2 56.0 Last-start failure was over 2000 m. Lone win in this season was against metric milers at Oamaru in August. J. Moffat 11 0351 Windvale Sea 9 56.0 Last-start win was over 1600 m in lower grade at Riccarton last week. 12 005 Fondle 10 54.5 Has been racing in weaker company. Fair run at Riccarton last start. R. Starr 13 1150 Jendra 13 54.5 Coming back off middle distances for toughest test so far. 14 1508 Not Much 5 54.5 Taranaki-trained mare. Best run this season was to win Waverley highweight last month. 15 2188 Sea Princess 16 54.5 Expensive failure against sprinters at Banks Peninsula two starts back. Unplaced in stronger field at Riccarton, November 6, drawn wide, but might bounce back. and go close here. B. Smith I 16 1524 Sharlanza 1 54.5 Useful in lower grades, but this a much more formidohlo fact 17 2439 Trade Union 17 54.5 Will struggle from wide out in this company. 18 1010 Worldy Mist 3 54.5 Failure in only start at Riccarton Cup carnival. Race 8 4.0 T.A.B. DOUBLE HOKITIKA HANDICAP $3300; 1200 m. 1 869 Gold Refrain 2 57.0 Nippy performer on West Coast courses, and should improve on anything he has shown so far this season. 2 1190 Wadi Wahid 4 56.0 Out of his class at Riccarton, but different proposition in this company on small tracks. One of better chances. J. Moffat 3 770 Country Scene 5 54.0 Did not show much in lone start at N.Z. Cup meeting, but this easier. B. Smith 4 50 Lover Boy 1 54.0 Quick front runner, and should have the others at full stretch. T. Matthews 5 058 Apple Roona 9 53.0 Last-start failure was at 2000 m.
