Ban Kiwis, say Aust. unionists

Brisbane NZPA-AAP Queensland’s biggest trade union, the Australian Workers’ Union, will ask the Australian Confederation of Trade Unions to help restrict the free flow of unemployed New Zealanders into Australia. The A.W.U. state secretary, Mr Errol Hodder, said yesterday New Zealanders had an incentive to move to Australia because social welfare benefits were higher in the latter and “if they fail to get a job, they are better off

financially here.” He said at least 24,500 New Zealanders were entering Australia each year and were taking jobs from Australians. “At a time of extensive unemployment in our own country this is an intolerable situation,” Mr Hodder said. -“I believe the Federal Government should take a closer look at imposing restrictions otherwise New Zealand can continue to export its unemployment problems to this country,” he said.
