Apprentices ‘cheaper’

The Government should encourage employers to take on new apprentices, the Christchurch Joint Council of Labour, an informal group of members of Parliament and trade unionists, has said. It would be cheaper for the taxpayer to pay an apprentice’s wage, for the first two years rather than the unemployment benefit, said the group.

New Zealand was short of workers because of a lack of manpower policy, which had been exposed recently by the importation of workers from Europe, It was vital that the “think big” projects took a fair share of apprentices to repay the economy for taking skilled people from other areas, said the council.

It was in the interests of commerce, labour, and the economy that the Government planned for the. needs of the next decade. With an influx of schoolleavers on to the labour market in the next few months, the issues of youth unemployment would be more tragically evident, it said.
