Wellington radar report

PA Wellington Wellington Airport’s’radar had shut down 57 times this year and there had been 2980 aircraft movements without radar assistance, Parliament has been told. The Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Gair, said, however, that most of the shutdowns were a result of routine weekly maintenance taking

about two hours each ; Wednesday morning. These and other mainten- < ance shutdowns totalled 52. i There had also been three 1 shutdowns because of faults i and two for the modernisa- i tion programme under construction. i Mr Gair said in reply to a i Parliamentary question that 1 the two modernisation shut- J downs had been for 10 days I

and two days. The modernisation, when completed, would reduce the need to shut the radar down for routine maintenance at times when aircraft were moving, he said. The Minister said that radar was an aid to operation, and was “certainly not” essential. .Many airports did not have radar.
