One-day strike by Marsden riggers

PA / Auckland The refusal of the BadgerChiyoda Joint Venture consortium to employ three riggers on the Marsden Point oil refinery extensions project has led to a one-day strike by about 70 riggers on the site. The men have taken the action apparently in protest against what they say is a company blacklist. However, the consortium’s general manager (industrial relations), Mr Ron Richards, yesterday denied ' there was any blacklist.

“We identified to the Labourers’ Union the names of three pesons whom we did not wish to hire. They are on strike in, protest at that. We just said they were not suitable.” ■

Mr Richards said that he did not want to give reasons for the rejections. The riggers are due to return to work today.

Mr Richards said that he intended to write, to the Labourers’ and Boilermakers’ unions and to the Federation of Labour indicating the consortium’s position on the issue of recruiting workers from overseas.
